Copenhagen 1-1 Napoli: Italy’s hopes of progress are dashed by a draw with the 10-man hosts

Napoli’s hopes of advancing to the Champions League finals ended with a 1-1 draw with 10-man Copenhagen.

Scott McTominay’s header gave the visitors the lead in the first half, before Jordan Larsson converted the rebound from a penalty saved with 18 minutes remaining.

Copenhagen captain Thomas Delaney was shown a straight red card in the 35th minute after catching Stanislav Lobotka high on the studs on the follow-through of a tackle.

Napoli immediately had a chance in the 39th minute when McTominay rose highest to meet Elzif Elmas’s corner kick and steer the ball into the top corner.

The midfielder’s fourth Champions League goal of the season made him equal with Kenny Miller as the Scottish player with the most goals in the competition’s history (five).

However, Antonio Conte’s side were unable to capitalize on their advantage and Alessandro Bongiorno brought down Mohamed Elyounoussi inside the penalty area to give the hosts a comeback.

Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic saved Larsson’s spot-kick, but unfortunately the ball fell directly into the path of the Swedish substitute.

The Italians have won only one of their last five Champions League games and are 23rd in the table with one game in hand.

To secure a place in the play-off round, they must beat Chelsea in Napoli on January 28th.

Copenhagen move up to 24th place with eight points, but may need to beat Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou on matchday eight to secure a place in the play-offs.
