Benfica 4-2 Real Madrid: Goalkeeper Anatoly Trubin’s 98th-minute header sends Jose Mourinho’s side into the play-offs.

Mourinho’s side won the long battle, missing a number of chances and even seeing a penalty overturned by the video assistant referee before Kylian Mbappé’s header put them behind.

However, the home side equalized six minutes later when Raul Asensio’s spill was crossed by Vangelis Pavlidis and headed in by Andreas Schjelderup.

Benfica criss-crossed Madrid and took the lead just before half-time, with Pavlidis converting the penalty after Nicolas Otamendi went down under a challenge from Aurelian Choameni.

After the break, the Portuguese side improved, allowing Schjerderup too much time and space inside the visitors penalty area, before firing a shot past Courtois’ near post.

Mbappe put Alvaro Arbeloa’s side back within a point shortly after, capping off a dramatic finale with a smart finish for his 13th Champions League goal of the season.

Both teams had chances, but Asensio was sent off for his second attack in the 92nd minute. Substitute Rodrygo received two yellow cards for dissent within seconds, reducing Madrid to nine points.

However, the drama did not end with Benfica scoring the decisive goal in the most remarkable of circumstances.

With Madrid in 9th place and Benfica in 24th place, there is a 50-50 chance that the two sides will meet again in the play-off round.
