The blast occurred as there were talks of a military operation in the Tirah Valley in Pakistan’s restive Afghanistan border region.
Thousands of families have recently migrated from the valley to safer areas, but the Pakistani government does not officially recognize this activity.
Pakistan has recently witnessed large-scale coordinated attacks by large-scale militants in multiple locations in Balochistan province, with security forces announcing on Thursday that they had killed more than 200 militants.
In November last year, a suicide bomb attack targeted a district court in Islamabad, killing 12 people.
The President of Uzbekistan has also visited Islamabad. The explosion site is not far from the red zone area of Pakistan’s capital, where important government buildings are located.
Combat-related deaths soared 74% last year, with extremists accounting for more than half of the deaths, making it the deadliest year in more than a decade, according to a new report released by an independent think tank.
