Chrome on Android has offered Reading Mode for several years, but Google is currently redesigning it significantly.
Update date 2/28/26: As of this monthChrome for Android’s reading mode redesign is widely rolling out. As seen in Chrome 145, there is a server-side component.
Starting in December, Google made the back-to-live webpage button a little more noticeable by placing it in a rounded square. Additionally, Lexend is a new font option for readers.
[読書モードを表示]If you tap and the webpage is not available in reading mode, you will see a pop-up message that says “Reading mode is not available.”
Original 12/30/25: The previous “Reading Mode” experience does not consistently appear for all articles that may require a simplified display. When it was available, there was a large button next to the omnibox, which was eventually reduced to a circular shape.

On some devices, you’ll see “Show Reading Mode” in the three-dot menu below.
“listen to this page” This button always appears in the overflow, regardless of the page you are visiting. The old address bar shortcut appears to have been removed, but the button to quickly exit reading mode remains.
Tapping it takes you to a new view that keeps the omnibox instead of taking up the entire screen like before. The bottom of the Reading Mode sheet, which takes full advantage of Material 3’s expressive containers and shape morphing, offers similar customizations as before.

Reading mode settings are saved through various pages, and the manual activation option is the best part of this update.

I have this problem on two running Android devices. chrome 143 Today on a stable channel. However, it has not yet been widely deployed. There are some “reader mode” flags to manually trigger this before full boot.
