Crystal Palace failed to show their dominance as they drew with Zrinjski Mostar in the first leg of the Conference League play-offs.
The Eagles had more than 70 percent possession and looked to be on track for their first knockout victory in a major European competition with Ismaila Sarr’s goal two minutes before half-time.
But the hosts punished Oliver Glasner’s side for a sloppy start to the second half in the 55th minute, with Carlo Abramovic firing past Dean Henderson and poised to equalize ahead of next week’s second leg at Selhurst Park.
The weekend with no FA Cup games meant an eight-day break between Palace matches, but manager Glasner was able to name a strong line-up featuring Adam Wharton, Brennan Johnson and Jorgen Strand-Larsen.
The visitors started brightly and could have taken the lead within seven minutes when Sarr volleyed past Goran Karacic.
Immediately after, England international Wharton’s shot went over the post as the Premier League team continued to make a lively start.
Palace capitalized on a loose ball in the 12th minute when Sarr finished cleanly from six yards remaining and found the back of the net.
However, the goal was quickly canceled out as defender Chris Richards crossed the ball from an offside position to the Senegal international at the back post.
Zrinyski responded to the early pressure with a rare attack from the right, which required the last-minute intervention of defender Daniel Muñoz.
The hosts threatened again six minutes earlier when Antonio Ivancic broke through and scored with a superb header from Mario Kuze.
But it was Palace who made the breakthrough in the 43rd minute. New signing Strand Larsen set the ball up with a sharp first touch, allowing Sarr to score his third goal of the season in the Conference League.
But nine minutes into the second half, a sloppy pass from Wharton allowed Zrinjski to equalize, and Abramovic received a perfectly weighted pass from Leo Mikic and curled a shot into the far corner.
Wharton almost made up for it with his first goal for the club in the final 20 minutes when he hit the crossbar.
Glasner was visibly frustrated on the touchline when Wharton’s corner kick was met with a free header from inside the box by Richards, and his side were unable to convert their advantage into a winning goal.
Things could have gotten even worse for the Premier League side in the 81st minute, as the referee went to the pitchside monitor to check a suspected handball on Munoz.
However, the decision went Palace’s way and both teams will now face next week’s second leg at Selhurst Park level.
