T20 World Cup: England considering Rehan Ahmed for match against New Zealand in Colombo

England will consider including leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed for their T20 World Cup Super 8s match against New Zealand in Colombo.

England, who have already reached the semi-finals, will take another look at the pitch on Friday before naming their eleven.

The match will be played on the same surface where New Zealand beat Sri Lanka on Wednesday, when 10 of the 15 wickets went to spin, and England will want to cover all their options.

Bowling coach Tim Southee said he expected the wicket to be “pretty rough”.

“I’ve seen spin play a huge role here,” Southey said.

“It’s a very large area, but that doesn’t mean the seamstresses can’t have an impact. [New Zealand seamer] Matt Henry last night. ”

Ahmed, 21, is a regular for England, but has not played in a T20 game since last September’s tour of Ireland and has not featured in a World Cup.

He played in three one-day international matches against Sri Lanka, which were also held at this ground last month, and was the opening pitcher twice.

If a leg-spinner is selected, Jamie Overton will likely replace the pace bowler.

New Zealand chose just two pace bowlers in their win over Sri Lanka, with 30 of the 40 overs bowled by spinners.

England will be left with pace bowlers Jofra Archer and Sam Curran, as well as Adil Rashid, Liam Dawson and Will Jacks.

Jacob Bethel has yet to play in the tournament due to a cut on his finger. His availability to bowl will also influence England’s thinking.
