It is one of four Super 1000 events held around the world in Britain, China, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Super 1000 events are the highest level tournaments below the World Championships and Olympic Games and are, in essence, the badminton equivalent of tennis Grand Slam tournaments, with the All England Open Badminton Championships being the oldest of the four events.

The world’s first open tournament was held in Guildford in 1898, the success of which led to the inaugural All England Open a year later.

That competition was held at the Drill Hall at the London Scottish Rifles’ headquarters in Westminster on four courts and initially consisted of only a doubles format before the singles tournament was introduced in 1900.

The All England Championships were unofficially regarded as the sport’s world championship until 1977, when the International Badminton Federation launched its own official championships.
