A massive snowstorm, predicted to be the worst in nearly a decade, began hitting parts of the U.S. East Coast on Sunday. It is expected to last until Monday afternoon.

About 40 million people are under blizzard warnings, including New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Long Island, and another 19 million are under winter storm warnings.

New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut are also under a state of emergency, with some areas expected to receive up to 24 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

As of midnight local time (5 p.m. Japan time) on Monday, much of the Northeast was already covered in several inches of snow, with 10 inches reported in parts of New York and New Jersey.

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has issued a travel ban, meaning only essential vehicles will be allowed on roads and bridges in the five boroughs from 9pm local time on Sunday to 12pm on Monday. All schools in the city will also be closed on Monday.

Thousands of flights have already been canceled and authorities have warned that any travel is dangerous.
