Samara Tijori has emerged as one of the most talked about performers after the release of Amazon’s gripping crime series Daldar. Her portrayal of Anant, a chilling yet profound character, has garnered unanimous praise from audiences and critics alike. In an exclusive conversation with Subhash K. Jha, the actor opens up about the overwhelming response, her intense preparation and the mental strain of playing such a dark role.

Daldar breaks out Samara Tijori on the psychological toll of playing a serial killer. “It took a long time for Anant to get out of the system.”
I have never seen a character or performance like yours. Daldar. How did you respond to everyone’s praise?
The praise and love I am receiving is much greater than I expected. Knowing that your efforts are recognized and appreciated is both exhausting and extremely rewarding. It really fills my heart to see and hear all that is coming.
What did you think when you were first offered the role of a serial killer?
When I got to audition for Anant, I was sold instantly. I’ve always been interested in the mind of a criminal. I studied psychology with the intention of pursuing criminology, but ultimately decided to take action. But I never lost interest in this subject. Auditioning for a role like this and actually bagging it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to use everything I’ve studied and researched to bring it to life on screen.
You prepared diligently for this role, right?
Yes, I worked closely with psychologists to understand Anant’s psychology from his birth to the age we meet in the series. I never felt anxious about the darkness of the role. Because the roles allow me to explore a wide range of emotions and really challenge myself as an actor. Anant is a very complex girl. She has experienced some very dark days in her life and those experiences have shaped her as a person. It wasn’t easy to connect with her, but approaching her with empathy made the process possible.
How did you personally perceive Anant as a character?
To me, she was still a small child who needed care and love. She witnessed the worst sides of humans and eventually grew into that version herself. I connected with her by understanding her inside and out, recognizing that she was a product of a divided society that left traumatized children unattended and uncared for.
Was your closeness to the character traumatic?
Anant has been with me for a long time. I don’t deny that. At the same time, she allowed me to access and express parts of myself I didn’t even know existed. Strangely enough, I feel like I was healed to some degree through her.
What do you want to do as an actor in the future?
I would like to continue to challenge all genres in the future. I’ve mostly played gray or dark characters, but I enjoy that space and want to explore my entire spectrum as an actor. For now, I am accepting everything and praying every day that I will continue to impress the audience through my performances whenever I get a chance to appear on screen.
