The Buffaloes’ season opener at Georgia Tech will be Thursday, Sept. 3, in Atlanta, the school announced Monday. The kickoff time will be announced at a later date, but the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

The move continues a recent trend under Sanders, whose programs have become regulars in standalone windows. This is the third consecutive season and the 12th time in the past 14 years that the University of Colorado’s season opener has been moved from its traditional Saturday. Last season’s opener against Georgia Tech at Folsom Field took place on Friday night.

The Sept. 3 matchup will be the second game of a home-and-home series between the programs. Georgia Tech holds a 1-0 advantage with a 27-20 win in Boulder last season. The Buffaloes will be looking to even the series in this second game in Georgia. Colorado previously played Georgia in 2006.

The visit to Atlanta also has additional meaning for Sanders, who played for the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Braves. On October 11, 1992, he famously played in both the NFL and MLB games on the same day. Sanders was selected by the Falcons with the fifth overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft.

Colorado State’s home opener is scheduled for Sept. 12 against Weber State. The Buffaloes went 3-9 in 2025, the worst record of Sanders’ tenure.
