To accomplish this, Discord says it will update all users’ accounts worldwide to the teen designation by default. This will “update communication settings, restrict access to age-restricted spaces, and filter content.”

Adults will be required to verify their age by providing a facial scan or ID, and in some cases both. According to a blog post on Discord:

Discord users can choose to use facial age estimation or submit identification to a vendor partner, with more options to be added in the future. Additionally, Discord implements an age inference model. This is a new system that runs in the background to determine whether an account belongs to an adult without constantly asking users to verify their age. If more information is needed to assign an age group, some users may be asked to use multiple methods.

According to Discord, the rollout of age verification is expected to begin in “early March.”
