a A long time ago, probably in 2009 if I remember correctly, we took a tour of Duke University’s practice facility. It was really wonderful in many ways and left a huge impression on me.

When I got on the court, the first guy I saw was hitting a shot I didn’t recognize, and it turned out to be Kyle Singler. He was significantly thinner than the year before, when he was needed in the frontcourt. Duke essentially had two guards in Nolan Smith and John Scheier that year, and Singler was needed as a third option. So after beefing up to help the inside the year before, he came back thin to help the backcourt.

That was the Singler we knew, even if only from afar. He was focused on the team and winning. He was a man you wouldn’t expect to have serious problems later in life.

We don’t know what happened to him, but he posted some videos last year (we think so) and was also arrested in October and charged with one misdemeanor count of assault and battery in front of a child. The suspect allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and the girl’s mother.

Now, another video has surfaced in which he makes several disturbing claims, including that he is homeless and that his daughter is being “sexually, physically, emotionally and mentally abused.”

It’s unsettling to see him struggling, but I don’t know why he’s doing it. We know that many people would be happy to help him if possible. I hope he gets the help he needs.
