Sheep Esports – “I’m starting to question whether this system makes sense” — Faker talks about LCK Cup format

There are still two best-of series left in the group stage: T1 vs. Dplus KIA and HLE vs. Gen.G

After DRX won against Hanjin Brion at the start LCK Cup Super Week on Wednesday, January 28th, Lee “fakerSang Hyuk said the following about this format:It looks like the Baron team is over…I’m starting to wonder if this system even makes sense.
In the current LCK Cup, 10 teams are divided into two groups. Gen.G,T1, Nongshim Red ForceDN SOOPers, and Hanjin BRION are on one side of the Baron group, and Dplus KIA, KT Rolster, DRX, BNK FearX, and Hanwha Life Esports are on the other side of the Elder group. In the group stage, each team plays against all teams from other groups.

In the first two weeks, first to three games earned one point, and then in the Super Week, first to five games earned two points. After all games are completed, the top two teams in the Winners Group and the top teams in the Losers Group will advance directly to the playoffs, while the bottom three teams in the Winners Group and the second to fourth place teams in the Losers Group will play-in. The last Losers Group team will be eliminated.

Play-in despite perfect regular season

What bothers Faker about this format is that even though T1 and Gen.G currently have perfect records with four wins in the series, there is a chance they will end up making it through the play-ins, as only the first-place team from the losing group will advance directly to the playoffs. Baron Group currently has 10 points, 8 from T1 and Gen.G, 1 from Nongshim RedForce, and 1 from DNS.

On the Elder Group side, DK and BFX currently have a total of 14 points with 3 points, and the other 3 teams have secured 2 points each. Therefore, the next series will be decisive. If NS fails to defeat KT, even if T1 and Gen.G defeat Dplus KIA and HLE and finish 5–0, the Elder group will move up to 16 points, making a victory for the Baron group impossible.

Possible scenarios

Currently, if both T1 and Gen.G win their series and KT wins against NS, Gen.G will advance directly to the playoffs and T1 will have to pass through the play-ins since Gen.G has a clean sweep of all their opponents and T1 is 2-1 in 3 games.

If Nongshim wins KT roll starThe world runner-up team has a good chance of being eliminated in the group stage early on. They currently have 2 wins and 2 losses, but if they lose, it will become 2 wins and 3 losses. In terms of score difference, they will lag behind DRX and will depend entirely on the results of the other teams in the group against T1 and Gen.G. Basically, their chances are very slim.
