The first trailer has been released for Lee Cronin’s new film Hamunaptra, which tells a very different story from Brendan Fraser’s parallel adventure series. Cronin’s The Mummy focuses much more on actual horror, reinventing the mummy as a young girl and taking cues from the genre’s current tropes, with a story reminiscent of recent hit Bring Her Back.
Here’s the trailer:
The film says, “A young journalist’s daughter disappears into the desert without a trace.” IMDb Logline. “When she returns eight years later, the shattered family is shocked. What should have been a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.”
As I said, there’s a definite Bring Her Back vibe here, about a desperate mother who uses forbidden magic to bring her daughter back to life. Of course, there’s an Egyptian twist, using the highly mythologized concept of an actual ancient mummy.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (official full title) has nothing to do with Beloved The Brendan Fraser/Rachel Weisz franchise is also being revived In the form of a new sequel. Cronin’s film marks the second attempt to reboot Hamunaptra in a new horror-focused franchise in the past decade, following the ill-fated 2017 remake starring Tom Cruise.
In both cases, the film recalls the original 1932 version of Hamunaptra, one of the most famous Universal horror films along with Dracula, The Wolfman, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Lee Cronin’s ‘Hamunaptra’ stirs controversy; producer and veteran horror director weighs in James Wan reportedly left an advance screening.. Coupled with the confusion surrounding the use of ‘Hamunaptra’ as the title, there is reason to be skeptical about the film.
