Kudos, a research showcase platform, is launching a research project to help publishers and the wider research community understand and respond to the threats of zero-click search (“Google Zero”) and AI overview panels. The initiative’s launch partners are De Gruyter Brill, Emerald Publishing, IOP Publishing, Silverchair and Springer Nature.

This study investigates the impact of zero-click search not only on publishers’ traffic and business models, but also on research integrity and trustworthiness of the academic record. Incorporates research on user perception and behavior. Through desk research and teleinterviews, we provide insight into how organizations within and outside our industry are tackling the zero-click search threat. Actionable next steps for publishers and platforms, including practical guidance on implementing Answer-Engine Optimization (AEO).

The study was code-named “Tame the Crocodile” after the term “crocodile effect” coined by SaaS marketing expert Tim Soulo to describe the growing gap between content impressions on search engines and click-throughs to source platforms.

“Academic sectors need to act quickly to prepare for the next phase of this seismic shift in how information is discovered and consumed, and how new usage behaviors are measured, reported and evaluated,” said Kudos co-founder Charlie Rapple, who is leading the research. “This broad and agile project will provide data and recommendations to help editorial, product, technology and marketing teams respond to the threat.”

Kudos leads many research studies in collaboration with publisher sponsors, allowing you to benefit from comprehensive findings and expert analysis for far less than the cost of conducting such major studies individually.
