An England cricket supporter from Cheshire has completed a “brutal” 166 kilometers across Sydney after Joe Root’s performance in the Ashes series forced him to face his toughest test of endurance yet.
Charlie Smith, known online as chase charlieset off at 7pm on Wednesday 14 January and covered the distance from Bondi to Manly and back in one continuous effort, running through the night.


The challenge was the culmination of a pledge he made before the series to run one kilometer for every point Root scored during the Ashes in support of Save the Children UK.
“I have been here for all five Tests.
I thought, why not run a few miles?
Why don’t you torture yourself more?
If watching England wasn’t painful enough.”
Root’s last Test innings, played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, saw 160 in the first innings followed by another six in the second, confirming the maximum distance Smith would face during the series.
When Root reaches triple figures, England supporters usually celebrate it.
For Charlie, that meant lacing up his trainers and hitting the road for another long run.


The choice of route was intentional.
“He’s a goat, simple as that.
I thought he would hit the most RBIs. Fortunately, that’s how it turned out.
“Maybe I should have done Travis Head?”
The idea was announced on social media in November, with the 24-year-old standing outside Perth’s Optus Stadium before he threw the ball.

After initial testing, this challenge seemed manageable.
Root was sent off after giving up 0 runs in the first innings and 15 runs in the second, and Charlie’s early performance was minimal.
