Warner Bros. Pictures has officially begun development on a film set in the world of Game of Thrones.
Beau Willimon, the screenwriter of Andor and co-creator of House of Cards, is reportedly writing the script, which is expected to tell the story of King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros three centuries before the events of the main story.
The project was previously teased in a profile article by franchise creator George R.R. Martin. At the time, both HBO and Warner Bros. Pictures were shown to be working on rival versions of the story, the former as a limited series and the latter as a film.
The film version is being planned as an epic feature film in the style of Dune. With Warner sold to Paramount Skydance, the fate of the franchise is currently uncertain, despite Paramount boss David Ellison recently hinting that Game of Thrones is his favorite HBO show.
Multiple “Thrones” spinoffs are still in development at HBO, including an animated version of the character Seasnake.
Two programs set in that world are currently airing. The recently aired “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” will air its second season next year, and “House of the Dragon” will air its third season this year, with a fourth and final season currently planned.
