At Riviera, Marco Penge and Jacob Bridgman lead in the intermediate stages, but world No. 2 Rory McIlroy is in hot pursuit.
Penge made five birdies in his final seven holes, becoming the first player to post a total of 12 under.
“To be fair, the last four weeks have been very difficult for me and my family,” the 27-year-old said. “She is in the United States alone, without family or friends, is pregnant, and is caring for a one-and-a-half-year-old child at the same time.
“It was kind of a gamble that I was just going to compete and leave her alone.”
