I’ve heard that Samsung’s default keyboard, and indeed iPhone keyboards, have had this for a long time. But until now, things were more complicated with Gboard.
Why typing apostrophes in Gboard is so awkward
To switch from letters to punctuation, I had to tap the “?123” key at the bottom left of the keyboard. After tapping an apostrophe, you must select the same key to return to the letter. You can also achieve the same result by tapping the spacebar.
