Google is ditching Android’s de facto weather app in favor of search results. This deprecation started slowly a few months agobut now it’s gaining momentum.
Google apps have long offered a full-screen “weather” experience launched from a shortcut on the home screen. Sun and clouds with a “G” icon.
Tap to go to a single feed with a search bar where you can switch between saved cities. Froggy’s background is displayed first, showing the current temperature, max/min, status, and feel.
Next, you’ll see a carousel of hourly forecasts and 10-day forecasts, which you can tap to see more details. Current conditions include wind, humidity, UV index, barometric pressure, sunrise and sunset cards. Precipitation, wind, and humidity graphs are displayed in time details.
old
In recent months, when users tapped the weather home screen shortcut, they were instead taken to the Google search results page for “weather.”
Home screen shortcut now leads to Google Search
This page has recently been redesigned so that the Froggy cards serve dual roles: current status and hourly predictions. It adds a tapable 10-day forecast carousel and dropdowns for precipitation, wind, humidity, and air quality (a new feature).
Google also uses AI Overview to provide an overview of current weather conditions.
new
Users who receive a “Weather page has moved” notification no longer see the “Show all details” button at the bottom that opens the full-screen weather experience. Scroll down in this new experience to see web results.
Over the past few days, more and more devices have been migrated to this new experience, and the old weather app is no longer accessible. However, this has not yet been fully developed.
Google probably didn’t want to maintain two experiences anymore and chose Search as its weather app.
