World No. 2 Jannik Sinner has won back-to-back Australian Open titles and is aiming for his third consecutive title starting with his first-round match against Hugo Gaston.
Gaston, ranked 93rd in the world, has faced Sinner twice in his career (both in 2021) but has yet to win a set against the Italian.
Sinner was dominant on hard surfaces, winning the 2024 US Open and the 2024 and 2025 Australian Opens. He also won Wimbledon in 2025 and has reached the finals of five consecutive Grand Slam tournaments.
So it’s no surprise that oddsmakers have him as the heavy favorite for this first-round matchup against Gaston.
Here’s a look at the odds, each player’s history at the Australian Open, and my predictions for the third matchup between Gaston and Sinner.

Hugo Gaston vs Jannik Sinner Australian Open History
Hugo Gaston
This will be Gaston’s fifth appearance in the singles tournament at Melbourne Park, but he has now only made it past the first round in two of his past four appearances.
Gaston has never made it past the second round at the Australian Open and has only finished in the third round or higher at a Grand Slam twice (both at Roland Garros).
Therefore, this will be a very difficult battle for Gaston. Gaston has lost only two matches to Sinner in his career.
Jannik Sinner
Sinner has reached at least the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in three of the past four years, winning back-to-back titles in dominant fashion.
The Italian has continued his meteoric rise, reaching the final of every Grand Slam since the 2024 US Open. He also hasn’t lost before the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam since the 2023 Australian Open.
He has faced Gaston twice in the round of 16 at the 2021 ATP Masters 1000 in Miami and Marseille. Sinner won both matches on hard surfaces in straight sets.
Hugo Gaston vs Jannik Sinner predictions and picks
Sinner is the heavy favorite in this match, and for good reason.
The Italian has only lost nine games out of four sets against Gaston in his career, winning twice in straight sets on hard surfaces in 2021.
Sinner has now returned to Melbourne Park and has enjoyed great success in recent years. Gaston, on the other hand, usually withdraws in the first week of Grand Slam tournaments, especially the Australian Open.
Looking at the ‘Set Betting Odds’, Sinner is -575 to win in straight sets. That would put him in a great position to win this match in less than 26.5 games, but he only lost one set (out of four) against Gaston by more than two games.
I believe the No. 2 player in the world will advance in straight sets in the first round because he is the best hard court player in the world.
