Inside Jill Douglas’ life, from her sports star husband to her ‘fight’ with an Olympic hero

Jill Douglas is a Scottish television presenter who became a well-known sports journalist and currently covers the Six Nations.

Sports presenter Jill Douglas is currently in the middle of her busiest period of the year as one of the hosts of ITV’s Six Nations coverage.

The 56-year-old, who grew up in Bonchester Bridge in the Scottish Borders, has covered some of the biggest tournaments and charmed many sports fans over the years.

The mother-of-two fronted Border TV’s Lookaround news magazine before moving to SportScene in 1997 to cover BBC Scotland’s rugby union coverage. In 1999, she joined Sky Sports as a sports news presenter, covering both rugby and Golden League athletics competitions.

In 2003, she returned to the BBC as one of the main presenters for other events such as rugby union, cycling and the Olympics, and has since become a familiar face on the channel, also working for BT Sport and ITV.

On Saturday, February 21, she will be a guest on ITV’s James Martin’s Saturday Morning alongside singer-songwriter Freya Ridings. Here’s a look at her life off-screen.

sports star husband

Like the BBC’s Gabby Logan, Jill is married to a former Scottish rugby team player. She and her husband Carl Hogg live in Cheltenham and have two children, Keith and Rosie.

Hogg made 17 appearances for Scotland A between 1992 and 2000, serving as captain six times. From 1992 to 1994, he played five times for Scotland and won five caps. He is currently Academy and Development Director at Gloucester Rugby.

Although the pair keep their family life private, Jill occasionally shares photos from their time together on Instagram, including their recent trip to Bucharest.

“Spats” with Olympic heroes

Jill reportedly got into an awkward situation with the Olympic legend during a live broadcast of the 2016 Rio Games. The Brazil Games were Sir Bradley Wiggins’ last, with the cycling icon winning his fifth Olympic gold medal in the team pursuit event. This equaled the record set by rower Sir Steve Redgrave, who was co-presenting with Gill at the time.

Gill had begun interviewing Wiggins when Redgrave, who himself retired after the 2002 Sydney Olympics, came forward to take over. It was previously reported that he hugged his compatriot on the side of the velodrome, prompting an immediate reaction from Gilles. mirror.

“Let me do it,” she said to Redgrave. This briefly made TV uncomfortable, but she later downplayed the topic of the altercation, tweeting a photo of the pair smiling with the caption: “As you can see, Sir Steve is furious…”

Snooker star’s apology

Gill also hit the headlines following a seemingly unwarranted abuse from snooker star Shaun Murphy. Working on ITV’s The Players Championship, she quizzed the ‘magician’ about the idea that a lack of focus was to blame.

Murphy responded with a somewhat bizarre rant about “lazy journalism.” He also suggested the views were “ridiculous”, but later reversed course and plans to apologize for his actions, the Mirror reported.

In fact, he gives Jill some wine and a card as an apology, admitting that he made a mistake by “jumping down her throat.”

charity work

Jill, who was awarded an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honors, is known for her work with the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. She became the group’s CEO in 2017 amid her friendship with Scottish rugby legend Dodie Weir, who died in November 2022 after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease. Although Jill is no longer CEO, she remains a patron of the charity.

James Martin’s Saturday Morning airs Saturdays at 9.30am on ITV1 and ITVX.
