The Winter Olympics are full of great family stories, but none quite like the Hughes family. Brothers Jack and Quinn play for the USA men’s ice hockey team, and their mother, Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, is a development coach for the USA women’s ice hockey team. Their third son, Luke, plays in the NFL, and his father, Jim Hughes, is a former hockey player himself and previously served as director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
They have already made history in more ways than one. Ellen Weinberg-Hughes
Ellen was a three-sport collegiate athlete at the University of New Hampshire in soccer, lacrosse, and hockey. She then played for Team USA at the 1992 IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championship, leading the team to a silver medal. She was selected to the tournament’s all-star team.
After finishing her career as an athlete, she worked as a reporter at ESPN. She currently works as a player development consultant for Team USA Women’s Hockey.
All three of her sons play hockey because of her. “We didn’t know what sports it would be, but we probably thought the kids would do track and field or some kind of competitive sport,” Jim said. said “And my wife got them involved in skating at an early age. That’s what we did too. We were a hockey family.”
Jim Hughes
Jim played hockey at Providence College and later became a coach. After working as an assistant coach for the Orlando minor league and Boston Bruins, he became director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs. “What he was telling 20-year-old prospects is what he was telling us when we were 12” Jack say. “Every time I had a chance to watch a game with my dad, it felt like I was watching video with an NHL coach.”Jim is currently the director of player development for CAA.
quinn hughes
Hughes’ eldest son, 26, played college hockey at the University of Michigan from 2017 to 2019 and was drafted seventh overall by the Canucks in 2018. He finished the season at the University of Michigan and then joined the NHL. He was traded to the Minnesota Wild last season.

The middle Hughes brother, now 24 years old, was selected No. 1 overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. He plays for the New Jersey Devils. “Being an athlete and being a hockey player is in my blood” Hughes said michael kay show. “My parents are playing ball with it.”

Hughes’ youngest brother, 22, is not on Team USA, but was a first-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. He was drafted fourth overall by the Devils, where he plays alongside his brother. He is currently on long-term injured reserve with a shoulder injury.
