Considering the geographical development of the LA28 football (soccer) tournament, LA28 is developing a match distribution plan that allows the competition to gradually move from east to west as teams advance to the final stage, minimizing travel demands.
Additionally, to support athlete health and increase recovery time between matches, the International Olympic Committee and LA28 are considering extending the competition period for the Olympic soccer tournament and setting up preliminary matches before the opening ceremony.
The schedule, including dates for the women’s and men’s football (soccer) tournaments and distribution of matches by stadium, will be announced before the first ticket sales in April 2026.
The specific team combinations will be revealed at a later date, subject to further developments in the LA28 Olympic Football (soccer) qualification process and official tournament combinations.
For the first time in Olympic history, there will be more women’s teams than men’s teams, with the women’s tournament expanded to 16 countries and the men’s tournament adjusted to 12 countries.
