As anti-government demonstrations continue and the internet is shut down, “illegal mass murder” is being carried out on an “unprecedented scale.” amnesty international Wednesday, citing verified video and witness testimony.
“The continued impunity for crimes committed by security forces during current and past protests has emboldened Iranian authorities to continue their criminal activities,” the group said. He called on UN member states to pursue mechanisms of international justice “to prevent further bloodshed”.
More than 2,400 protesters have died in Iran since anti-government protests began, according to a US-based human rights group, far more deadly than in previous protests.
Amnesty International analyzed dozens of videos and photos from 10 cities in six provinces, including Tehran, and corroborated them with interviews and medical testimony.
Amnesty International said footage showed security forces firing directly from rifles and shotguns at unarmed protesters and bystanders from the rooftops of houses, police stations and mosques. Two videos show authorities chasing and opening fire on fleeing civilians who appeared to pose no threat.
Amnesty International also examined verified videos showing overflowing morgues, including a makeshift facility in Qarizak, near Tehran. CNN previously confirmed a similar account from the facility.
“This spiral of bloodshed and impunity must end. The severity and scale of the killings and repression since January 8 is unprecedented, given the Iranian authorities’ own dark past of committing grave human rights violations and crimes under international law during successive waves of protests,” said Amnesty International Director-General Agnès Callamard.
