LOS ANGELES – Anaheim Ducks center Leo Karlsson will be out for three to five weeks to receive treatment for a left thigh injury, leaving his ability to represent Sweden at the Olympics in doubt.
Carlson underwent surgery in Los Angeles on Friday for a Morel-LaVallee lesion, a rare degloving injury in which skin and fat separate from the fascial tissue, leaving a fluid-filled space.
Karlsson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 draft, is off to an unusual start this season with the Ducks, scoring 38 points in his first 29 games. He has been in a scoring slump over the past month, scoring just six points in his past 15 games.
Karlsson, 21, has been selected for Sweden’s Olympic team, but the Milan-Cortina Games start in three and a half weeks.
Karlsson remains the Ducks’ leading scorer this season with 44 points in 44 games.
