Canada v Afghanistan
scorecard
Chasing, centurion Yuvraj Samra from the previous match hit a four on the first ball against Mujeeb-ur-Rahman. Captain Dilpreet Bajwa showed great intent with some of his best performances and great timing.
Just as he found touch, he tried to create space against Mujeeb but failed as the ball rattled the stumps. Navneet Dhaliwal came third.
Canada’s mighty player failed to make much of an impact in the final innings of international cricket. Because he played straight into the hands of the backward point and fell into a five-ball duck.
Veteran spinner Mohamed Nabi was introduced into the attack and immediately made an impact by dismissing Samra for 17. In the 8th inning of the next game, Nicholas Carton’s time error resulted in another run, leaving Zadran, the hero of the first inning, safe in his hands.
Afghanistan, who reached the semi-finals in 2024, will be hoping to finish the T20 World Cup on a high after registering 200/4 against Canada in Chennai on Thursday. This total is the highest in T20 World Cup history.
Once in bat, Afghanistan’s opening pair got off to a good start once again, scoring 47 runs. However, star batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz gave up 30 runs and Afghanistan slumped to 49/2 in the powerplay.
Ibrahim Zadran led the rebuilding of Afghanistan with a tireless half-century and a 50th consecutive World Cup appearance. A 95-run partnership with Sedikara Attar (44) gave Afghanistan the perfect platform to start the last few overs. Zadran carried the bat and scored a career-best knock of 95 off 56, which is also the highest score by an Afghan player in this World Cup. In a well-paced inning, he had seven walks and five sixes.
For Canada, Jaskarandeep Singh was the most successful bowler, finishing with 3/52 in four overs.
