Rula of Sokolova: A sensory chart born from Latvian birches and childhood dreams

Tarsi, Latvia

Drawing on the quiet wisdom of living close to nature, the creators of the Luula table have combined thoughtful design, authentic inspiration from natural wood, and craftsmanship passed down through generations. Born from the Latvian birch forests, trees shaped by the rhythms of the seasons and the breath of the Baltic Sea, Lula brings a timeless scent of northern tranquility and slow life. Fragments of the author’s own childhood are woven into this foundation. The concentrated joy of long winters, the dreams shaped by trees and wind, and the desire to create something lasting and meaningful for future generations.

Sokolova’s Luula table received the 2025 Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Center for Architecture, Art, Design, and Urban Research.

What emerged was more than just a table. It is a story carved into wood, a sensuous and evolving space where creativity, learning and safety come together.

Each Luula sensory play and learning table and chair set is made from sustainably grown Latvian birch plywood and laminated with an opal white film overlay. This material offers the unique dual benefits of increased resistance to scratches and abrasion, combined with a soft, reflective surface that amplifies the natural wood grain with light depth. The result is a tactile, elegant finish that feels both grounded and dreamy, like a light resting in a forest.

But design extends beyond aesthetics and feel. It is defined by a function. Luula is designed to grow with your child, offering three height levels for ages 18 months to 12 years, accommodating the natural transition to adult-sized furniture. This enhanced ease of use respects sustainability through longevity and adaptive evolution.

Functionality pervades the essence of the table. This set features a retractable chalkboard that doubles as a writing or drawing surface, a locking safety key for parental peace of mind, and adjustable height for ergonomic support. Modular side compartments store art tools, learning aids, or tactile elements, and clear plexiglass panels allow for dry-erase drawing or layered storytelling. Built-in paper rolls ensure endless creativity and are complemented by learning boards tailored to visual, sensory and kinesthetic styles.

All elements serve an educational purpose, empowering children to explore, organize, and express. The raised edge of the tabletop creates a physical boundary and a personal sanctuary. This is essential for people who are attentive or sensitive to the senses. The right compartment provides order and rhythm, fostering spontaneity through a structured environment.

In inclusive classrooms and neurodiverse homes, Lula facilitates change. Teachers and therapists note that its offerings, as well as its calm and safe aura, increase engagement, focus, and creative autonomy. The vertical board sharpens fine motor skills and pencil grip, while the white and clear acrylic surface evokes a “third dimension” for multisensory play. Children layer materials, draw, and narrate within the space to develop understanding through movement, light, and texture.

Today, Luura is an early childhood companion who illuminates everyday moments, advances learning through form, and inspires joy, tranquility, and imagination. Its creators envision serving children around the world, brightening childhoods, promoting growth, and shaping a gentler future. Lula also offers solace to those whose purity has been taken away by war. A haven to create, heal, and reclaim the essence of childhood and sow the seeds of a safer, wiser tomorrow.
