Former Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho endured a tough game against West Ham on Saturday and Gary Neville gives his opinion on the Argentine.
Gary Neville has spoken out about his concerns about former Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho after the Argentine endured a tough game for Chelsea against West Ham on Saturday. The 21-year-old moved to Stamford Bridge this summer for a fee of £40 million, which included a 10 per cent sell-on clause.
The forward became United’s fourth most expensive transfer in the club’s history, behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Angel Di Maria. Garnacho has made 26 appearances for Chelsea so far, scoring six goals.
However, the Argentina international struggled mightily against the Hammers and was said to be one of the reasons why his team lost 2-0 at half-time. and former Reds Captain turned pundit Neville explained why Garnacho’s performance was important against his team on the Gary Neville Podcast After suffering a shocking home defeat against a relegation-threatened side, they came back to win 3-2.
He said: “I have to say West Ham were really good in the first half. Even if they didn’t dominate the ball, they dominated the game. They dominated the game.”
“They had the best chances, they were more physical and Chelsea’s left flank disappeared. I think Alejandro Garnacho is a player who sometimes divides opinion.”

“A lot of people are wondering: Is he top class or where is he? Where is he in the pecking order?
“What was tough to watch last night was to see such a young player go to Chelsea and it looked like he was devastated in terms of his confidence on the left.
“I’m not just talking about when. [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka kept chasing him running forward, but when he actually received the ball, his first touch came back, but then he just kept going back and giving the ball away.
“It was an awkward and very scary experience for Hato and Garnacho on the left side and for Badia Seal. But once he changed that, the game completely and completely changed.”
United signed Garnacho on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid in September 2020, and the teenager has established himself as a key member of the first-team squad after developing through the academy and winning the FA Youth Cup.
Garnacho made his first-team debut under Ralf Rangnick in April 2022 against Chelsea at Old Trafford. He continued to develop under coach Erik ten Hag in the 2022/2023 season, making 37 appearances in all competitions and scoring six goals and providing six assists.
However, concerns were raised over his attitude and he never functioned well under Ruben Amorim before being sold to Chelsea in the summer.
