Watching Marvel’s new TV show got me even more excited for Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Jon Watts started out in low-budget horror films. clown Although the budget is a little high, it is still indie. police car. This latter film proved he was an ace at coming-of-age stories, and it was the one that landed him the role of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And because, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far from Homeand Spider-Man: No Way Home It’s clear he was the right choice for this material, as they’re all so great. This is also why many were disappointed when it was announced that he would not be returning to this year’s competition. Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

However, concerns were allayed when Destin Daniel Cretton was confirmed as his replacement. After all, he just proved that he can introduce a relatively niche Marvel character into one of Phase 4’s best films.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has some great, fluid action sequences and is definitely exciting. But the reason this film is one of the best MCU adventures of the past five years is because it’s all about the characters. We get to see one of the most compelling dynamics in the history of the series in the relationship between Xu Wenwu and his children.

He is a father who drove away his children with his obsession, and that obsession is not only unraveling him, but now threatens the Earth. This is a compelling story, and makes the final battle on Taro very compelling. This isn’t one of the MCU’s trademark finales where something big falls through the sky towards Earth. It’s like another MCU cliché, where the hero fights what amounts to a reverse version of himself. But in this case, it works because the son is trying to save his father from a horrible mistake.

there is another side Shang-Chi This shows how good Cretton is at portraying characters and making them attached to the audience. And in this case, he took a character that was little more than a controversial joke (not in terms of content, but in terms of fandom reaction) and began fleshing it out. That’s Trevor Slattery, and while he’s still a bit of a punchline here, we get to see him form a nice friendship with little Hundun’s friend Morris.

This is something Cretton continued in his most recent contributions to the MCU. wonder man. One of the best Disney+ Marvel shows, wonder man This is another example of how Cretton focuses on creating memorable characters and situations that force them to change, rather than overblown set pieces. We see Slattery develop the most important relationships in his life with his protagonists.

He begins the series as a stooge of the Damage Control Bureau, which is consistent with who he has been so far, a goofy, overly trusting, gullible character. However, as the series progresses, we see him making decisions on his own, and they are all done with a kind heart. It’s in wonder man We finally get to understand who Slattery is, and because of that, we’re convinced that Cretton, like Watts, is the perfect person for Spider-Man.

no way home It was the most action-packed Spidey movie ever. It worked very well, but ended with a minor reboot becoming apparent. Peter Parker erased himself from the minds of everyone who ever knew him. He’s soul-crushingly alone right now, and that’s not a position you’d want the most likable MCU character to be in. However, it was his choice, similar to Slattery’s final choice in the film. wonder manit is altruistic at great personal cost.

We are now tracking Parker’s original location. homecoming. That’s 10 steps forward and 11 steps back. Because right now he doesn’t have Tony Stark’s guidance or skills. He’s basically the same street-level superhero that Stark was shown in the video. Captain America: Civil War.

But there was a trade-off that probably put him at an even worse disadvantage. He lost Stark, he lost Aunt May, and now he’s lost both his best friend and girlfriend. He may have learned something through his years as Spider-Man, but his heart was shattered.

This is a great way to start a new era in Spider-Man movie history. And knowing that Cretton knows how to develop characters and make them completely lovable, it will be very interesting to see how he does it where already beloved characters now have every right to fall into the garbage dump.

Plus, Cretton clearly loves the MCU. He’s able to sprinkle in sweeping references that don’t feel like blatant fan service. He incorporates them in a way that doesn’t disrupt the momentum of the scene or the overall story. Perhaps he’ll continue that in this web-slinger movie. And with the MCU losing some of its momentum right now, it’s great to have writers who not only craft great character-focused stories, but are passionate about what they’re doing. If there’s one thing the MCU needs right now, it’s passion.
