It was a great day for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The women’s hockey team defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime to win the Olympic gold medal. Canada almost clinched the coveted prize until the United States stripped it of the win with just over two minutes left in regulation. Switzerland defeated Sweden in similarly dramatic fashion to win the bronze medal.
In the world of figure skating, Alisa Liu won the gold medal in the women’s free skate, becoming the first American to win a figure skating gold medal in 24 years. Teammate Amber Glenn finished fifth overall, which speaks to the strength of her performance on the day after a disappointing routine on Tuesday left her 13th.
Other notable medal moments from today include:
Chinese skating victory: Jordan Stoltz of the American team was aiming for his third gold medal in Milan, but fell just short to China’s Ning Zhongyan in the men’s 1,500m speed skating race.
American curling records: The U.S. women’s curling team won with a spectacular final pitch, advancing to the semifinals for the first time in 24 years.
Norway wins…again: Finland won the Nordic Combined Team Sprint by 0.5 seconds over the Finnish team, winning their 16th gold medal of the tournament.
Skimo’s first ever winner: Marianne Fatton of Switzerland made history by winning the first women’s skimo sprint gold medal. Spain’s Oriol Cardona Coll won the gold medal in the men’s ski mountaineering sprint, marking Spain’s second gold medal at the Winter Games and the first in 54 years.
Another newsworthy moment:
Love at the Olympics: Before the spectacular goal he scored in the final stages against Canada, team usa’s Hilary Knight proposed to Brittany Bowe, dressed in team gear, of course.
