Live updates: Updates on Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance and person in video

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe said federal authorities have likely been preparing since yesterday for the flood of tips expected after the release of footage from Nancy Guthrie’s front door video camera.

McCabe said yesterday the FBI had a surge of personnel in the Tucson, Arizona, area. This will ensure there will be someone to follow up on information expected to come in from the public, he said.

Surveillance video showed a masked person fiddling with a camera outside Guthrie’s home moments before she disappeared.

“There’s going to be a lot of people in this area that will call and say, ‘I think I saw something weird,'” McCabe said. “We have to have two agents interview all of these people within a few hours to find out what they can offer.”

McCabe also said there are probably hundreds of analysts processing information and images that come in online and over the phone about the case.

“You have to look at all of them and prioritize them,” McCabe said. “There are a lot of people on the back end who have to do a lot of work to turn these calls, these tips, these observations into solid leads.”

Most tips don’t lead to breakthroughs, he said, but “you may need to consult thousands of other tips” to arrive at the few that do.
