India opener: Abhishek was under no pressure after two ducks, says coach

India opener Ashishek Sharma, who has failed to score so far, need not feel pressure in the T20 World Cup as he has a “clear plan and a clear mindset”, the team coach said on Tuesday.

In Group A, defending champions India won 3 of 3 matches.

They will play the Netherlands in their final group game in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, with a spot in the Super Eight already assured.

However, Abhishek’s always explosive left-handed form is attracting attention.

“We will not do unnecessary overanalysis,” India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak told reporters.

“Because sometimes you start second guessing what the rebels are doing.

“He organizes his plans and follows the plays he wants.

“Naturally we talk about the opponents and the strength of their bowling. That’s normal for any batsman.”

The 25-year-old missed the second match against Namibia due to a stomach infection.

Either side of it, he recorded two ducks – the first ball in the opener against the US and the fourth ball against Pakistan – meaning he only faced five balls in the entire tournament.

“He was running even before he got sick,” Kotak said.

“The T20 format is a high-risk game and players are going to get sent off at some point. If we start emphasizing things like that, it will put pressure on players.

“He’s doing well and has a clear plan and a clear mindset.”

Kotak said there was no dead rubber for India ahead of the match against Netherlands, which has no impact on the tournament.

“Momentum is important in every game,” he said.

“We played with the same intention in the last game and we will play with the same intention in the next game.”
