Olympics news, live updates: USA vs. Slovakia in men’s semis; curling falls to Switzerland

The 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics are in full swing, and Friday will be another massive day in Italy:

U.S. women’s curling loses to Switzerland in semifinal

Beating Switzerland in consecutive matches proved too difficult for Team USA on Friday. A day after defeating Switzerland to advance to the semifinals, Team USA lost 7-4 to the Swiss team Friday.

Switzerland played a strong defensive game, limiting Team USA to just one point in the ends in which they scored. Switzerland also controlled the hammer, forcing multiple scoreless ends to keep the final stone.

While the U.S. tried to make it tough in the 10th end, Switzerland executed on its hammer throw, picking up two points to seal the victory.

With the loss, Team USA will play for the bronze medal Saturday.

Team USA faces Slovakia in men’s hockey semifinal (3:10 p.m. ET)

Both the United States and Canada are one win away from the matchup ice hockey fans have been anticipating since the Winter Olympics began. Canada plays Finland in the first semifinal at 10:40 a.m. ET and the U.S. takes the ice versus Slovakia in the late game.

Slovakia went 2-1 in group play and advanced to the semifinal with a 6-2 win over Germany in the quarters. After going 3-0 in the preliminaries, Team USA had a tougher path to Friday’s game, grinding out a 2-1 overtime win versus Sweden. The winners here advance to Sunday’s gold medal final.

Brittany Bowe falls short in final event

Brittany Bowe took her final laps as an Olympic speed skater on Friday afternoon in Milan. She received an ovation from the heavily pro-Netherlands crowd at the speed-skating arena, though her head-to-head rival Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong received a louder one. Bowe sprinted off the starting line, and at the 300m mark was 0.69 seconds ahead of the leaders’ pace. That mark stayed at 0.46 seconds at 700m, and just 0.17 at 1100m. But she steadily began losing pace, and she crossed the line 0.55 seconds behind the lead time.

She would go on to finish fourth in the event, leaving her off the podium. It marked the third time Bowe has finished fourth in an event at the 2026 Games.

Kristen Santos-Griswold chases gold in short track speed skating (2:15 p.m. ET)

In the women’s 1,500 meters, American Kristen Santos-Griswold pursues her first gold medal in her second Winter Olympics. (She finished short of the podium in heartbreaking fashion at the 2022 Beijing Games.) Her final chance at a medal in Milan Cortina comes in what is arguably her best event.

It took nearly the full 60 minutes, but Canada is going to the gold-medal game. Nathan MacKinnon’s score with 35.2 seconds left gave Canada its first lead of the game, and pushed the Canadians into the final.

On paper, Canada turned in an impressive performance, leading Finland in shots 39-17. Despite that, Canada trailed the entire way, falling behind 2-0 before coming back to score three-straight goals and win the contest.

It was a tense couple minutes for fans of Team Canada. Moments after it looked like Canada scored a go-ahead goal with under a minute left, the call went to a review.

After a lengthy review, officials determined the goal would stand, putting Canada up 3-2 with 35.2 to go.

Canada waited a long time to take their first lead of the game, but they claimed it when it mattered most. With 35.2 seconds left, Nathan MacKinnon scored to give Canada a 3-2 lead.

That could be the game for Canada, which needed a late power play to pull ahead. Finland nearly killed that power play, but Canada scored at the last-possible second.

Finland will now need to pull off a miraculous score to send this one to overtime.

With the third period winding down, Canada now has a massive advantage. After a high-sticking call, Canada will have a power play through essentially the rest of the period.

If Finland can kill the power play, they would be back at full strength with roughly 30 seconds to play.

Canada can take a win here if they can capitalize on the advantage. Otherwise, the game could head into overtime with both teams tied 2-2.

Finland leads 2-1 with under six minutes to play in the second period.

Oh, Canada! As Sebastian Aho sat in the box after taking an interference penalty, the Finns found a way to capitalize.

After the puck found its way out of their defensive zone, speedy Erik Haula zipped through the neutral to pick it up and beat Jordan Binnington with a backhand for a shorthanded goal.

Finland has two goals on nine shots and have now scored on a power play and a penalty kill.

Sebastian Aho’s face-off win went directly back to Mikko Rantanen, who then fired a wrist shot past Jordan Binnington.

The face-off was in Canada’s defensive zone after Sam Bennett took an unnecessary penalty in Finland’s zone moments before. The power play goal is Rantanen’s second of the tournament and was their first shot on goal in over seven minutes.

Team USA made it tough in the final end, but could not steal a point to send it to extras. Switzerland hit their final shot, knocking Team USA out of the house to take two points — and the win — in the semifinal.

With the win, Switzerland is guaranteed a medal at the 2026 Olympics. They’ll play in the gold-medal game Saturday.

For Team USA, they’ll have a shot at the bronze.

Team USA continues to be limited against Switzerland. The Swiss team has held the Americans to just a single point in every end in which they’ve scored, making it 5-4 going into the final end.

Switzerland holds the hammer in the last end, and just needs to make sure the U.S. doesn’t steal a point here.

The Americans have some work to do against Switzerland late. Team USA is down 5-3 in the ninth end.

The Americans need to make progress now, as they hold the hammer in the ninth end. A trip to the gold-medal game is on the line, so Team USA will need to step up its game now if it wants to play for gold.

Sidney Crosby will not be available for Canada’s Friday Olympic semifinal game against Finland after suffering a lower-body injury during the team’s quarterfinal victory over Czechia, Hockey Canada announced.

Connor McDavid will act as Canada’s captain as international rules require teams to feature a playing captain.

The 38-year-old, two-time Olympic gold medalist left in the second period after being hit along the boards by Czechia’s Martin Nečas and Radko Gudas. It was the third big hit Crosby took in the period after Gudas and Ondřej Palát connected on checks with the Team Canada captain.

Crosby recovered and took a stride following the Gudas and Nečas hit and was seen shaking his right leg before exiting the ice. After being attended to on Canada’s bench, Crosby limped down the tunnel to the locker room. He was ruled out for the remainder of the game early in the third period.

The game would need overtime and Mitch Marner’s goal after 82 seconds of 3-on-3 play booked Canada a spot in Friday’s semifinals with a 4-3 victory.

Through five ends, Switzerland holds a 4-3 lead over the U.S. Despite grabbing a two in the fourth end, the Swiss can’t shake the Americans, who have kept the match tight and stayed in the hunt.

In the other semifinal, Canada and Sweden and tied at two after four ends. The winners of today’s matches will meet for gold on Sunday. The losers will play for bronze on Saturday.

The U.S. saw their last shot knock out a Swiss stone, but roll out of the house. That set up Paetz to deliver two points for the lead after four ends.

Skip Tabitha Peterson continues to deliver for the U.S. She grabbed a point in the third end to even the score at two.

So far through three ends having the hammer has been the key to getting at least a point on the board.

Thirty-three times, the gold-medal-winning U.S. women found the back of the net over the course of seven consecutive victories in Milan. Thirty-three times, American crowds responded by pumping fists, waving flags, chanting U-S-A and dancing or mimicking playing the guitar in their seats, though the song was barely audible above the din after Megan Keller’s overtime goal lifted the U.S. to gold over Canada.

“Free Bird” has been the soundtrack to 18 goals from the U.S. men, including Quinn Hughes’ overtime game winner against Sweden on Wednesday night. The American men will have the chance to cue up “Free Bird” a few more times when they face Slovakia in the semifinals on Friday night in Milan.

“This is all player-driven,” USA Hockey manager of communications Melissa Katz said. “After how much it caught on during the [World Junior Championships], it was a no brainer to keep the momentum rolling with that goal song. From our under-18 teams to our Olympic teams, they’ve embraced ‘Free Bird’ over the last year.
