“He hadn’t mastered the craft. I’m so proud of him,” Jordan said with a smile. “He didn’t learn the technique today.”
The veteran’s playful jab came after a high-stakes bout in which emotions could easily boil over. Fiers, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, played with a maturity that belied his age, especially after Pelicans star Zion Williamson left the game early in the second quarter with a right ankle injury.
With Williamson sidelined, Fiers stepped up in a big way. The rookie guard finished the night with a huge double-double, recording 18 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. He also had five assists and two blocks in 34 minutes, showing exactly why he’s a staple on the NBA rookie ladder all season.

The Pelicans relied on a balanced attack to achieve their fourth straight win. Saddiq Bey led the scorers with 24 points, and Bryce McGowens matched Fiers with 18 points. Herbert Jones anchored the defense with 17 points and eight rebounds, helping New Orleans survive a late surge from Utah’s Isaiah Collier, who finished with 21 points.
Fiers’ development as a calm playmaker is a big win for a Pelicans team that is starting to make strides in the Western Conference. If he can rack up a double-double while avoiding the referee’s whistle, DeAndre Jordan will have a lot more to be proud of.
