Still reeling from last weekend’s shock defeat to Casa Pia, Primeira Liga leaders Porto welcome defending champions Sporting Lisbon to the Estadio do Dragoon in Monday’s summit clash.
Separated by four dots. tablesomething has to give in this round of 21 battle: Porto are unbeaten at home this season, while Sporting are yet to lose in a league match on the trip to Gameweek’s headline match.
match preview
The mood at Portista this week must have been one of frustration after a surprising 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Kassapianos despite leading the table. It was the team’s first setback in an otherwise impressive 2025-26 season.
The defeat lifted the winners out of the relegation zone, while Porto saw their seemingly healthy seven-point advantage cut to just four ahead of the visit of strong rivals and defending champions Sporting.
A loss on Monday won’t cost the home team the top spot in the division, but it would be a relief if a comeback in the second division narrows the advantage to just one point.
That’s why the unexpected blunder at Casa Pia was particularly unwelcome by Francesco Faglioli’s men. They are now looking to repay that disappointment by returning to their winning ways at Dragao.
Indeed, precedent from this season suggests that Portistas should be demanding maximum points, with 25 of their 27 points coming from home games and having scored 19 goals and conceded just two in those nine games.
Given their strong season so far, another home win would restore their lead and have the club’s fans dreaming of a 31st La Liga title and first since the 2021-22 season.

Sporting, for their part, will welcome the chance Casapianos gave Faglioli’s side in their last game, as the Dragons hope to inflict back-to-back league defeats on Porto for the first time since January 2025, when they were upset 2-0 and 3-1 against Nacional and Gil Vicente.
Such a result would not only move the visiting side closer to the top of the league with 13 games remaining, but it would also avenge their 2-1 comeback defeat in Lisbon, the Lions’ only defeat at 25-26.
Since that August setback, Rui Borges’ side have won 13 of their 16 top-flight games, dropping points only in 1-1 draws with Braga, Benfica and Gil Vicente, leaving them nine points behind third-placed Benfica and positioning themselves as Porto’s main challengers.
Given their status as two-time defending champions, Borges’ team will be well aware of the importance of winning at Dragao, where the Lions have not won in La Liga since April 2016.
Sporting have now lost five in nine outings since the 3-1 win, but eagle-eyed fans will point out that all four draws they have earned in this period have come in their last five outings, including back-to-back stalemates in 2023-24 and 2024-25. This suggests that Porto is inching closer to winning the league for the fifth time in their history.
Borges’ side, who have avoided defeat in their 10 away league games this season and won eight, will be hoping to clinch a third straight title and 22nd title in total, and give their rivals a boost by finishing ninth in the Dragons.

William Gomez will miss Monday’s matchup after being sent off in Round 20 against Casa Pia, the first of several absences.
Tomas Perez’s Achilles problem will be assessed, but Nehuen Perez, Seko Fofana (calf) and Luuk de Jong are not expected to feature against Sporting.
Sam Agehowa, who has scored 13 goals in the league, has contributed to 31.7% of Porto’s goals, and the forward will aim to further increase that tally in Matchday 21.
Of note, 6 of Sam’s 13 goals were game-winners, highlighting his decisiveness, while 8 of his total goals came with Dragao, showing where he does the most damage.
The away team’s biggest threat is undoubtedly Luis Suarez, who has scored 18 league goals, one less than Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis, but six of the Sporting forward’s goals have come on the road.
Suarez, who has two more match-winning goals than Agehowa, is currently tied with Pavlidis on eight games won, but will be looking to score another decisive shot at the Dragon and gain an edge in this mini-race.
This season, Francisco Trincao and Pedro Goncalves have created 11 and nine big chances respectively, ranking them first and third in the division, with Trincao assisting a league-high seven goals to Goncalves’ five, underscoring their creative influence.
The visitors are also dealing with some injury problems, with Giovanny Quenda (foot), Fotis Ioannidis (knee) and Zeno De Basto sidelined.
Porto’s projected starting lineup:
D. Costa. A. Costa, Silva, Kiviol, Fernandez. Friendrup, Rosario, Veiga. Pepe, Agehowa, Sainz
Expected starting lineup for Sporting Lisbon:
Silva. Fresneda, Diomande, Inacio, Araujo. Morita, Hillmand. Catamo, Trincao, Gonçalves. suarez
We say: Porto 1-1 Sporting Lisbon
Porto’s remarkable home record, conceding just two goals in nine league games, suggests that they can limit Sporting’s creative brilliance.
Given the pressure of competing for the title, both sides may choose to take a cautious approach, potentially ending in a hard-fought draw.
