new york – a A severe nor’easter snowstorm is hitting millions of people across the Philadelphia, New York City and Boston metropolitan areas this weekend as computer models try to piece together a complex forecast.
Many factors need to come together to create a blockbuster hit. It’s a slow, precise course along the northeast coast and plenty of cold air from Canada.

Meanwhile, Boston should brace for 12 to 18 inches of snow through Monday.

A Winter Storm Watch has already been announced for New York City, Long Island, parts of New Jersey including the Jersey Shore, Connecticut, and Massachusetts including Cape Cod.
Winter weather warnings are in effect for parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut, and a coastal flood watch is in effect for Boston.
What is a nor’easter?
Forecasters are currently tracking the energy of the storm over the Rocky Mountains.
As the system moves across the country and reaches the East Coast, it is expected to track offshore and become a strong coastal storm around Sunday, according to the FOX Prediction Center.
How close the storm’s track is to the coast will determine whether significant amounts of snow will fall on I-95 in the Northeast and other parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
The FOX Prediction Center said Friday that “even a 50-160 mile jog east or west into the storm will result in reduced or increased snowfall for millions of people.”

With the possibility of heavy snowfall increasing, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani announced Friday that the city’s health staff is preparing for the storm.
The mayor said on social media, “If possible, I would like you to give yourself plenty of time to travel, check on your neighbors, especially the elderly, and take your time.”
But those models reversed course overnight, suggesting a larger snowstorm was brewing.
