MILAN — Even the most experienced players were nervous when the United States allowed Sweden the tying goal with 91 seconds left in the Olympic men’s hockey quarterfinals.
“It’s the most nervous I’ve ever been at a hockey game,” Dylan Larkin said.
After a lot of nerves and extra hockey, America advances to the semifinals.
After Mika Zibanejad scored late in regulation time to tie the game, Quinn Hughes scored in overtime and the United States defeated Sweden 2-1.
“I was just relieved,” Hughes said.
After Canada did its part, it was a roller coaster of drama and emotion, but the U.S. bounced back with Zibanejad’s score and capitalized on the possibility of a matchup between the North American rivals in Sunday’s gold medal game.
Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced, but none were more important than Lucas Raymond’s Grade A chance in the second period.
The United States will play Slovakia in the semifinals on Friday. Just before that, Canada, also undefeated, will play Finland.
“It’s going to be a very tough test,” Hughes said of Slovakia. “They’re doing well. They’re competitive, they’re fast. It doesn’t matter how many superstars they have, it’s just the level of desperation that’s so high. It’s Game 7 every night now.”
