Retro handheld game console maker Anbernic launches new gamepad with screen and heart rate sensor

File this under “Things that make me say, ‘Hmm…'” Retro handy maker Anbernic teeth launch New controller with screen. However, unlike Nintendo’s Wii U controller, there is no second screen gaming feature. Instead, the display is designed to be “intuitive and easily customizable.” Oh, and the controller also has a heart rate sensor. Because if things are going in a strange direction, I say fully commit!

The Anbernic RG G01 is equipped with a 2.5-inch HD display, which the company calls an “HD Smart Screen.” The idea is to remap buttons, program macros, and change other settings without the need for software on the connected device.

You can also monitor your heart rate while gaming. (Amber Nick)

Meanwhile, Ambernick says heart rate detection can help “monitor your health during intense sessions.” I hope people with heart conditions use something other than a gamepad to monitor their pulse. I don’t know why other people would worry about that during a game. (Too much Red Bull?) Anyway, Ambernick seems to be leaning into the novelty/curiosity realm here, and at least it fits the motif.

RG G01 connects in three ways: Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4Ghz wireless, and wired. Supports onboard calibration of triggers, joysticks, and 6-axis gyroscope. There are four programmable buttons on the back (including macro support). The company promises a 1,000Hz polling rate in wired and wireless modes. Gamepad is compatible with PC, Switch, Android, and iOS.

We still don’t know when this glorious weirdness will arrive, other than to say it’s “coming soon.” We also don’t know how much it will cost. However, you can watch the launch video below to see if that’s your type of quirky one.
