Real Betis improved their chances in the hot La Liga race for a spot in the UEFA Champions League as Manuel Pellegrini’s side recorded a 2-1 win against Mallorca, with Cedric Bakambu scoring the winning goal for the second successive season.
The visitors posed a major threat for Parma from the start, as Marc Roca’s 35-yard shot bounced off the post after just three minutes following a missed clearance by Mallorca goalkeeper Leo Roman.
However, it turned out to be just a warning shot to the host team’s defense. Former Barcelona winger Abdé Ezarzuri calmly scored in the 18th minute in the back-to-back match against Mallorca after Roma expertly parried Anthony’s shot from the edge of the box.
Mallorca’s best chance of the first half came just before the half-hour mark, but star striker Vedat Muriqui could only head Alvaro Valles from close range from a corner kick.
The Kosovo international’s frustration only served to give Betis more momentum, and in first-half stoppage time, Bakambu mercilessly fired another smart thread pass from Anthony and scored the goal.
Mallorca’s expected response was sluggish after the restart, but Muriqui remained a key figure for the home side even after receiving a caution for a failed penalty appeal on the same hour.
But the veteran forward was undeterred, and just six minutes later he headed in Sam Costa’s cross to score his 16th La Liga goal of the season and pull Mallorca back into the game.
The game ended late in the second half, with Roman making a sharp stop to keep Pablo Fornals at bay and taking the lead on both flanks, but the former West Ham United playmaker was able to finish with a brilliant header from David López.
Betis withstood any last-minute attacks from Mallorca and secured a third straight league win, keeping Los Verdiblancos in fifth place for the time being, although they are still four points behind Atletico Madrid and Villarreal. Mallorca, on the other hand, remain one point below the relegation line.
