Police are treating the disappearance of Today host Savannah Guthrie’s mother Nancy as a crime. arizona he said Monday while asking neighbors to check footage from home video cameras.

“We saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters Monday. “Now that we have processed the crime scene, we believe there is an actual crime scene, an actual crime occurred, and we are asking for the community’s assistance.”

“I want to emphasize, and it’s really important, Miss Guthrie, Nancy Guthrie has a wonderful and sound mind,” Nanos said. “This is not due to dementia. She is sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know this is not just someone wandering around.”

Nanos declined to provide additional details about the problems investigators found at the home, citing the ongoing investigation. “There were circumstances at the scene that appeared to be inherently suspicious. I think that’s the best way to put it,” Sergeant David Stivers told reporters.

The FBI is assisting with the investigation, two people told CBS News.

Search and rescue teams worked through the night using drones, helicopters and thermal sensors, but were later sent home as the search turned into a criminal investigation, Nanos said. “At this point, we are considering this less of a search mission than a crime scene,” he said.

Investigators pored over home security camera footage and searched Nancy Guthrie’s cell phone, Nanos said. Authorities were also looking at license plate readers and other surveillance cameras for clues in the case. The sheriff encouraged Guthrie’s neighbors to check their home security footage, even if the cameras are not pointed at Guthrie’s home.

“They might still see something,” Nanos said. “Maybe there’s someone walking. Maybe there’s a vehicle driving around at that time of day.”

The sheriff said investigators do not know whether Guthrie was the target. He also said he does not believe there is an active threat that poses a danger to the public.

Nanos said her family is cooperating with the investigation.
