Sentosa beach club Tipsy Unicorn closes after manager is fired by High Court

Singapore – The operators of now-closed Tipsy Unicorn beach club on Sentosa Island have been liquidated by the High Court and liquidators have been brought in to assess their debts to creditors.

On January 23, Judge Chionh Sze Chyi ordered privately held company Tipsy Bird into compulsory liquidation following a liquidation application by UOB. Two insolvency experts from BDO Advisory were subsequently appointed as co-liquidators.

UOB is seeking to recover more than $96,000 in debt and interest from Tipsy Bird, according to court documents seen by The Straits Times.

However, this may not be the entire scope of Tipsy Bird’s liability, the liquidators said.

In response to questions from The Straits Times in February, they said that without a statement of state revealing the company’s financial position at the time of collapse. couldn’t Determine the total amount owed to creditors or the number of parties affected.

“The company’s directors have not come forward to report the company’s affairs to the liquidator,” they said, adding that this remained the position as of February 16.

According to the liquidators, Tipsy Bird operated Tipsy Unicorn Beach Club at 36 Siloso Beach Walk. A preliminary investigation revealed that at the time the liquidation order was issued, the licenses required to operate the restaurant (food and alcohol sales, aquatic facilities, etc.) were in Tipsy Bird’s name.

The landlord then exercised its right to regain possession of the premises, they added.

Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC), the landlord of Tipsy Unicorn’s premises, confirmed on February 19 that the club had ceased operations as of January 30.

“Sentosa Development Corporation remains committed to curating a diverse mix of beach and lifestyle concepts on Sentosa Island and is in discussions with potential operators to introduce fresh experiences in the long term,” an SDC spokesperson said.

When ST visited the seaside venue on February 18, the outlet was shuttered. A sign at the entrance stated that Tipsy Unicorn ceased operations at that location as of Jan. 30.

On Instagram, where the beach club has more than 10,000 followers, its profile description says “Temporarily Closed.” When I tried to make a reservation on the website during normal business hours, there were no slots available.

The closure seems sudden. On Jan. 26, four days before the closure, the beach club posted an Instagram reel promoting its Booze Beat & BBQ event “held on the last Sunday of every month.”

A notice was posted at the entrance stating that Tipsy Unicorn had ceased operations at that location as of January 30th.
