Source: Bengals sign LB Boye Mafe and S Bryan Cook

The Cincinnati Bengals are taking steps to bolster their defense, adding outside linebacker Boye Mafe (fresh off a Super Bowl title with the Seattle Seahawks) and former Kansas City Chiefs safety Bryan Cook.

Mafe’s deal is for three years and $60 million, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Cook will sign for three years and $42.5 million, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Folwer.

Mafe, 27, is a speed rusher who served as a rotational outside linebacker for the champion Seahawks in 2025, recording two sacks and four tackles for loss in 20 games.

Mafe, the 40th pick out of Minnesota in 2022, became a starter in his second season and broke out with nine sacks, including one in seven straight games to set a franchise record. He followed that up with six sacks in 2024.

Mafe combined for 17 tackles for loss and 28 quarterback hits while playing as a starter for most of the 2023 and ’24 seasons. But with DeMarcus Lawrence arriving as a free agent in 2025 and Uchenna Nwosu returning from injury, Mafe came off the bench and averaged approximately 32 plays per game during the regular season and playoffs.

ESPN reported in November that the Seahawks almost sent Mafe to the Kansas City Chiefs before the trade deadline.

Despite his disappointing production in 2025, Mafe ranked eighth among all pass rushers in pass rush win rate at 18.7%. He ranks 19th in that metric over the past three seasons at 17.3%. Coach Mike Macdonald has described his ability to win quickly from the line of scrimmage as Mafe’s “superpower.”

In 65 regular season games, Mafe has 20 sacks, 24 tackles for loss, 36 quarterback hits, three forced fumbles and 14 passes defensed. He has made 34 exits.

Meanwhile, Cook had the best season of his four-year career in 2025, recording six pass deflections and a career-high 85 tackles. Starting every game for the Chiefs, Cook proved to be one of the team’s most reliable defenders and a player who has improved throughout his time in the NFL.

The Chiefs selected Cook, 26, with the 62nd pick in the 2022 draft. A standout member of one of the franchise’s most impressive draft classes, Cook helped the Chiefs become the league’s newest dynasty, winning two Super Bowl rings playing alongside teammates such as defensive end George Karlaftis, running back Isiah Pacheco, linebacker Leo Chenal and cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson.

In six postseason games, Cook recorded 17 tackles, with his biggest highlight being a leaping interception in Super Bowl LIX.

While learning and playing under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Cook became an interchangeable player in the secondary, a safety who could be the only deep defender or a safety who could effectively disguise the Chiefs’ coverage or blitz. Cook first became a starter in 2023, a year that ended with a season-ending left ankle injury. But before needing surgery, Cook in 12 games produced 42 tackles, one interception and two fumble recoveries, one of them returned 59 yards for a touchdown in a victory over the Miami Dolphins.

With Cook on their roster, the Chiefs went on to win nine consecutive postseason games.
