Source: Mavs and Raptors active in trade talks for Anthony Davis

The Dallas Mavericks’ most active trade negotiation involving Anthony Davis was with the Toronto Raptors as of Wednesday afternoon, but a deal is not imminent, sources told ESPN.

Mavs governor Patrick Dumont continued to stress internally that he felt no pressure to trade Davis before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, sources said.

The Mavs have been exploring the market for the 32-year-old Davis since former general manager Nico Harrison was fired in early November, but a major reason for Dumont’s decision was fan backlash over last year’s trade that sent perennial MVP candidate Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers to headline Davis.

Interim co-GMs Michael Finley and Matt Ricciardi are leading the Mavs’ basketball operations, and ownership is scouring potential candidates for Harrison’s permanent replacement.

The Mavs are in talks with multiple teams regarding center Daniel Gafford, according to sources.

The Raptors and Atlanta Hawks are the teams that have had the most in-depth discussions regarding Davis over the past few months, according to sources. Negotiations with the Hawks are on hold, but as the deadline approaches, there is some hope that Atlanta may make an offer based on the expiration of his contract.

If a trade with Toronto goes through, the Mavs would have to recoup a significant amount of salary beyond next season, so Dallas is prioritizing draft compensation in those negotiations.

The Raptors are actively looking for frontcourt help, including talks with the Sacramento Kings regarding center Domantas Sabonis, according to sources.

Toronto also held talks with the Memphis Grizzlies for forward Jaren Jackson Jr. before he was traded to the Utah Jazz on Tuesday, according to sources.

Davis, who has been sidelined since early January with a hand injury, is averaging 20.1 points and 11.1 rebounds in 20 games this season.

The Mavericks (19-31) have lost five straight since Wednesday’s opener and are in 12th place in the Western Conference, 3.5 games behind the 10th-place Portland Trail Blazers (23-28).

Meanwhile, the Raptors (30-21) entered Wednesday tied for fourth place with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the thick of playoff contention in the Eastern Conference.
