This week’s picks
strip method (tv set)
Strip Law (Netflix)
Author: Karen Crawford
cast: Adam Scott, Janelle James, Stephen Root, Shannon Gisela, Keith David
Now streaming: Netflix
Netflix has a very strong track record in adult animation, a medium of choice for creators. Star Trek: Lower Decks Alumnus Karen Crawford is really getting the chance to express her unique voice. strip method Great voice cast (Adam Scott, Janelle James, Stephen Root, and (Keith David?!?) This is a truly oblique look at the intersection of life and the law in Las Vegas. The series begins with a struggling lawyer (Scott) realizing that he needs to add a Las Vegas flash to his law practice to succeed in Sin City, and from there he becomes even more demented. At the very least, I have to praise the first season of the show for pivoting to a holiday special. The second episode. And it’s a holiday special like you’ve never seen before.
Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette (tv set)

Love Story (FX)
Author: Connor Hines
cast: Sarah Pigeon, Paul Anthony Kelly, Grace Gummer, Naomi Watts
Now streaming: Hulu
In last week’s battle, Predator: Badlands and love story, love story I lost, but I said I would like to feature it this week! Based on the true story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, this is one of those situations where the first paragraph of the Wikipedia entry is a spoiler for the final episode. love story The film is something of a chick-lit adaptation, tracking the emotional highs and lows of Bessette and Kennedy, who fall in love despite a swarm of publicity. It’s juicy and gossipy ( A decidedly strange development regarding Daryl Hannah’s involvement) But there’s also a lot of deep empathy for the people at the center of this story. 90s soundtrack Particularly noticeable — some can’t believe it I’ll pull it here.
songson blue (film)
Song Song Blue (Featured Features)
director: craig brewer
cast: Hugh Jackman, Kate Hudson, Michael Imperioli, Ella Anderson, Mustafa Shakir, Fisher Stevens, Jim Belushi, King Princess
Now streaming: peacock
There’s a lot of tender pathos in this film, based on a documentary about two Neil Diamond tribute artists and their struggles. There’s also plenty of Neil Diamond music, primarily performed by Hugh Jackman, which in itself is reason enough to watch. (Slightly off-topic, Jackman had the opportunity to audition for a film adaptation in the early 2000s. Phantom of the Opera and couldn’t do that Due to scheduleBut the idea of him replacing Gerard Butler in Joel Schumacher’s version…what if that movie had been like this? good, everyone? )
Okay, let’s go back on a tangent. songson bluea tender enough story about people whose dreams aren’t big but still feel impossible to achieve, making their journey all the more powerful. And while the film is officially nominated for an Academy Award thanks to Kate Hudson’s incredibly empathetic performance, there are plenty of actors here, including Jim Belushi as the humble manager of tribute act Lightning and Thunder, Michael Imperioli as a Buddy Holly impersonator, and King Princess as an ordinary teenager (seriously!).
industry Season 4 (TV)
Industry (HBO)

So this season is a little late, but industrybut I still saw enough to scream “THE CUT TO THE OYSTER!” With friends. In a way, it feels like the creators of this show are having fun with the way they allow this show to fly around a little bit under the radar and do some incredibly crazy plot developments. If you’ve never been to this show before, I highly recommend you give it a try. Yes, this is one of those shows where everyone is a bit of a monster, but that’s HBO for you, baby, baby.
i let a lot industry‘s financial stories are just memorable and not dissimilar to my viewing approach. inheritance. Streaming services always have the latest new releases on their home screens, but we don’t spend enough time to realize how much great library content is being streamed across all of these platforms. cutting edge (film)
The Cutting Edge (MGM)

Hey everyone, this is the 176th issue of this little newsletter. shocked I just realized that I’ve never mentioned my favorite Olympic-related movies here. shock! cutting edge For those who didn’t go to see the movie on a Girl Scout trip in 1992, it might not be all that shocking. But stars DB Sweeney and Moira Kelly have always had some heady enemies-to-lovers chemistry, and for anyone who might be suffering from Olympic drama addiction, this romantic comedy about a hockey player turned world-class figure skater might just be the ending. Toe pick!

Hines and Lesley Manville (also great!) play a long-term married couple whose relationship is forever changed by a trip to Amsterdam.
What do they recommend? Ciaran’s choice feels like the very definition of “games respect games.”
I was very late to the watching party. breaking badBut when Vince Gilligan’s spin-off Better Call Saul (Netflix) arrived, so I got into it right away. It has elements of madness/ridicule, but is also mysterious, funny, and very dark and dangerous. Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill and Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler were great together and their relationship was unlike anything I had ever seen before. Great script, great cast, highly recommended.
We are so honored to have Ciaran contributing this week! Midwinter vacation Currently in theaters — Click here for showtimes.
One last thing before I go to sleep
Finally, let’s spotlight movies and TV shows that are not only great, but that we don’t spend a lot of time on. Think of this section as an answer to the question, “What’s something to watch before heading out to the hay that won’t keep you up too late?” The only rule is that it must be less than 95 minutes for movies and less than 30 minutes per episode for TV shows. Otherwise, the sky is the limit!
