Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina and American Jessica Pegula are the last Australian Open semi-finalists. Facts from the 11th day of the tournament.

Rybakina defeats Swiatek

World No. 5 Elena Rybakina defeated No. 2 Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. The 2022 Wimbledon champion now has the chance to reach the final for the second time in the first major tournament of the year after picking up six wins in his 12th meeting with the Polish player. Three years ago, she lost to Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova for the tournament title. Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek once again prematurely failed in her goal of winning her first Australian Open title and completing a career Grand Slam. She has already won the French Open four times, Wimbledon and the US Open once each.

Pegula defeats another compatriot

World No. 6 Jessica Pegula defeated No. 4 Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), winning her third match against her compatriot in the tournament. She had defeated last year’s champion Madison Keys in the round of 16 and McCartney Kessler in the second round. Jessica Pegula reached the semi-finals for the first time in Melbourne. None of the 2024 U.S. Open finalists had ever made it past the quarterfinals.

Jessica Pegula will face Elena Rybakina in the semifinals. The other finalists will be Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus, who is ranked No. 1 in the world, and Elina Svitolina from Ukraine, who is ranked No. 12 in the world.
