Mikel Arteta made nine changes for today’s Premier League game against Leeds United, with Victor Gokeres and Kai Havertz included in the line-up, but Bukayo Saka picked up an injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Noni Madueke just before kick-off.
Gökeres and Havertz were to good effect in Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Kairat Almaty, with the returning German providing the assist for Viktor’s opener and Kai later scoring himself, ensuring the manager once again starts at Elland Road.
Havertz will be making his first Premier League start since the 5-1 win over Manchester City almost exactly a year ago.
Mikel, who had undergone extensive rotation in the lead up to the match against the Kazakhstan side, returned to a squad closer to his usual squad, with David Raya in goal behind a back four of Pierro Hincapie, Gabriel, William Saliba and Julian Timber. Martin Zvimendi and Declan Rice return to midfield, with Leandro Trossard on the left flank, while Maduke will replace Saka in the line-up as the captain feels the captain is preparing something at Elland Road. Gabriel will now own the armband.
Kepa Arrizabalaga, Riccardo Calafioli, Cristian Mosquera, Ben White, Ebele Eze, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli will all be on the bench, while Arteta confirmed before the game that Mikel Merino will be sidelined with a foot injury.
