‘The Ashes 2025’: Stuart Broad says England doesn’t have a drinking problem

England began their white-ball tour to New Zealand on October 18, before the multi-format players went straight to the Ashes series, which runs from November 23 to January 7.

England will tour Sri Lanka from January 22, playing in both one-day internationals and T20 internationals, leading into a T20 World Cup campaign that begins on February 8 and is likely to last for a month.

“As an international player, you need some release,” Broad said.

“If your mind hasn’t been switched off – I know you [fellow podcast host Jos Buttler] Football players say otherwise, but cricket players spend half the year holed up in hotels. I feel like I’ll go crazy if I don’t do anything.

“We watched Australia win the Ashes and Travis Head had the time of his life, doing wine and all kinds of interviews, making dreams come true.

“12 o’clock, I don’t come at that time very often, but if I win, I’ll probably go there and relax and have fun.”

Butler, who will play under Brook in future white-ball games, said, “The optics are a big issue as well.

“You have to be very conscious. Your teammates take care of you and you have to take care of yourself. Some of the more senior players may be more conscious of how to do that.

“That’s the price you pay to be an international cricketer and play for England. You can’t just go and do whatever you want.

“You’re a professional and you have to live a professional life. The boys do that too and you have to make it look like that.”
