‘The Wrecking Crew’ Review – Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa tear up the screen | Film

HIt’s a streaming action-thriller comedy that’s a throwback to the kind of pulpy, silly entertainment that made big bucks in the ’80s and ’90s. There’s a Phil Collins banger on the soundtrack, and there are references to Jean-Claude Van Damme. The target audience is likely men of all ages who are drawn to highly choreographed, casual violence and stunts peppered with jokes. So not only does it get the job done, but it also throws in the bells and whistles you’d expect, like fireballs erupting in the background as the characters flee the scene, tons of civilians being killed along the way without the protagonists feeling an ounce of remorse, an estranged brother getting to know his feelings about a recently deceased father who went astray, and learning a lesson about love in the process.

Yes, you read that last part correctly. Because The Wrecking Crew offers a gentle post-therapy enlightenment for the genre in the 2020s. The script goes so far as to give one of the main characters a child psychologist wife (Roimata Fox) who is ready to diagnose emotional dysfunction when necessary. Otherwise, the action is dominated by Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa, playing overly muscular, heavily inked, initially estranged half-brothers James and Johnny, who spend the film trying to figure out who killed their father Walter (Brian Colana) in a hit-and-run. James has a wife who is a child psychologist. He trains Marines and is a well-disciplined and solid citizen, but with just a hint of anger smoldering inside him. Johnny, an Oklahoma-based cop, is more flamboyantly drunk, abusive, irresponsible, and, according to all the TikTok videos about the siblings’ birth order, the typical younger brother.

Walter’s death reunites them in their home state of Hawaii. The story is particularly fascinating, with plenty of beautiful location photography and drone footage. At the same time, the script (by Jonathan Tropper, who wrote and hosted the recent TV series Your Friends and Neighbors) is more sly and interesting than it needs to be, acknowledging that the paradise is rife with corruption, as various gangster groups and corrupt figures seek to exploit the island’s beauty for their own gain.

The most obviously villainous character is a wealthy businessman named Robichaux, whose French name clearly suggests powerless monstrosity. He’s played by artistic stud muffin Claes Bang (The Square), whose cruelty is expressed simply by adding a British accent and a topknot. The big boss banter between him and Momoa at the end is gaseous, as is the chemistry between Momoa and Bautista, two adorable lugs who clearly have a thing for each other. The whole package is an easy to digest guilty pleasure.

“The Wrecking Crew” will be available on Prime starting January 28th.
