Vice President of India CP Radhakrishnan is scheduled to visit Odisha tomorrow, January 23, to commemorate Parakram Deeva, the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
The visit will focus on the Netaji Birthplace Museum in Cuttack and will include museum tours, participation in commemorative events, and the inauguration of a new district cultural building. However, the high-profile trip is expected to cause traffic congestion in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, prompting authorities to issue advisories and introduce diversions.
According to the schedule, the Vice President will arrive at Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport at 8:50 am on a special Indian Air Force flight from New Delhi. Thereafter, they will head to Cuttack by road and reach the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Birthplace Museum in Odia Bazaar by 9:35 am. The event in Cuttack will highlight Netaji’s enduring legacy and the Vice President will unveil newly constructed cultural institutions nearby to promote Odisha’s rich heritage.
After the morning program, Radhakrishnan will return to Bhubaneswar and have lunch at Lok Bhawan (Raj Bhawan). His departure is scheduled to take place around 2 pm from Bhubaneswar airport to Kolkata.
In anticipation of the visit, the Bhubaneswar Cuttack Police Department has issued a traffic advisory warning of traffic congestion along major routes from 8 am to 9:30 am and from noon to 2:15 pm.
The affected routes include Airport Square, Hospital Square, AG Square, Lok Bhawan Square, Power House Square, 120 Battalion Square, Sastri Nagar Square, Behera Sahi Square, Jayadev Vihar Square, Nayapalli Underpass, Jayadev Vihar Flyover, Satsang Vihar, VSS Nagar, Parasni Square, Hi-Tech Square, NH-16 to Shiharpur Square, Karyabuda VUP, Jobra Chak, Matamat Chak, Old Law University Hostel Chak, Greener Hotel Chak, Madhusudan Statue Chak, OPA Chak, Samaj Office, Buxibazaar Chak, Barapatala Chak, Tiniconiya Bagicha Chak, Jail Road Chak.
Temporary diversions will be in place to manage flows. Heavy vehicles, tractors and AMA buses will be prohibited on the Cuttack Mahanadi Ring Road and all connecting lanes from Shiharpur Chak to Chahata Chak from 7 am till the end of the event. Additionally, heavy vehicles on NH-16 will be rerouted during the Vice President’s journey.
Commissioner of Police Dr Suresh Dev Dutta Singh appealed to commuters to avoid designated routes, choose alternative routes, plan well in advance and cooperate with ground staff. “We request the public’s assistance to ensure the success of the event while maintaining smooth traffic flow within the city,” the advisory said.
The visit highlights the historical ties between Netaji and Odisha, whose birthplace of Kathak remains a symbol of India’s independence struggle. Local residents and officials are preparing for the dignified ceremony, balancing respect with practical arrangements.
